World Parrot Day X Space: Experts Unite to Protect Africa’s Parrots
On World Parrot Day May 31, 2024, Wild Africa Fund (WAF), in partnership with the Nigerian Tribune, hosted an impactful X Space event to spotlight the ecological importance of parrots and the significant threats they face. This event brought together leading experts to discuss the critical challenges faced by Africa’s wild parrot populations and actionable steps to help.
Guest Speakers:
  • Ifeanyi Ezenwa from the World Parrot Trust kicked off the conversation, revealing the fascinating role parrots play in maintaining healthy forests. He shared eye-opening insights into the dire situation of the African Grey Parrot, whose numbers have plummeted due to the illegal pet trade. These intelligent and iconic birds are prized for their ability to mimic human speech, but captivity often leads to tragic consequences.
  • Abim Isafiade of the Nigeria Customs Service provided insights into ongoing efforts to intercept the illegal trade of African Grey Parrots. She emphasized the importance of raising awareness and encouraged the public to use social media and other platforms to support these efforts.
  • Dr. Stella Egbe from the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) highlighted the necessity of protecting habitats like the Omo Forest Reserve in Ogun State, stressing “We must protect suitable habitats so that this species can thrive.”
The discussion concluded with a unified call for collaboration in conservation efforts.
All speakers agreed that protecting Africa’s parrots requires collective dedication and continuous advocacy beyond World Parrot Day.
By spreading awareness and taking action, individuals can play a vital role in ensuring the survival of these remarkable birds for future generations. Become a part of the movement to save Africa’s parrots!
