The Santuario de las Guacamayas in Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, Mexico, is working tirelessly to protect the Military Macaw from threats like illegal trafficking and habitat loss.
This family-run sanctuary focuses on installing and managing artificial nest boxes, and reforesting the land with pine trees. Despite challenges such as drought they continue their dedicated efforts to safeguard the Vulnerable Military Macaw and its habitat. Since these initiatives began, 30 nest boxes have been placed, and 70 chicks have successfully fledged!
As well as their commitment to macaws and other local wildlife, the sanctuary also welcomes visitors, offering a unique opportunity to experience nature and witness these magnificent birds firsthand.
The Santuario de las Guacamayas is registered as a Management Unit for the Conservation of Wildlife (UMA) by Mexican environmental authorities.
Nearly 1 in 3 parrot species are at risk of extinction, and grassroots conservation efforts such as these are important to protecting parrot populations that are often fragmented across their range.
