Yellow-naped Amazon Breeding Success

A new generation of Critically Endangered Yellow-naped Amazons (Amazona auropalliata) has taken to the skies in Guanaja, Honduras, thanks to the tireless work of our partners at Green Island Challenge.

During the 2024–2025 breeding season, 30 protected artificial nest boxes helped nearly 50 chicks successfully fledge, joining their wild parents in the island’s forests. These victories are hard-won. Yellow-naped Amazons face serious threats from poaching and the illegal pet trade, which have caused dramatic declines in wild populations throughout their range.

Before these conservation efforts began, many of these chicks would have been stolen from their nests long before they had a chance to fly. Today, thanks to round-the-clock nest monitoring and active community involvement, more chicks are surviving and returning to the wild where they belong.

But Green Island Challenge is doing more than just protecting nests, they’re empowering local communities to protect parrots for generations to come. Over the past year, their environmental education program reached 7 out of 8 schools on the island, engaging children in learning about parrots, forest ecosystems, and wildlife conservation.

These efforts are transforming awareness into action. By combining hands-on conservation with education, Green Island Challenge is sparking a movement that promises a safer future for Yellow-naped Amazons and the biodiversity of Guanaja.
